I've been looking into the old Asheville cases, and the story of Officer Edward Charles McConnell is one that really sticks with me. I can't get over how his killer was actually acquitted. How did that happen? I mean, it's mind-boggling to think about the evidence or lack thereof that led to such a verdict. Considering McConnell was just doing his job, transporting a prisoner who he thought was securely detained, it must have been a real shock for his family to see the suspect go free after such a painful loss. Does anyone know more about the trial or the defense's argument? My heart goes out to his wife and kids—it must have been hard to make sense of justice failing them like that.
