I came across C.J.’s story recently, and it truly got me thinking about the impact of community spaces or rather, the lack of them. It seems like neighborhoods without safe, engaging spots for young kids to gather might be more prone to such tragedies. C.J. was just riding his bike, something so simple and innocent, but where was he headed? Was there a place nearby where he could’ve hung out safely with friends instead of risking being out on the streets at that hour? It’s heartbreaking to think that circumstances might’ve been different if there were more resources available for kids in Henderson. Things like community centers or late-night safe spaces for teens could potentially keep them away from harm. We definitely need more conversations about improving safety and creating opportunities for young people to thrive in our communities. My thoughts are with C.J.’s family as they navigate through this difficult time. They deserve justice, and we owe it to Clayton to ensure no more young lives are lost like his.
