It's so distressing to read about yet another life lost in McDougald Terrace. Carl Suitt Jr.'s murder is a devastating reminder of the enduring cycle of violence in this neighborhood. It breaks my heart to think about Andrea Harris and others like her who must live with daily fear and uncertainty. Her decision not to investigate upon hearing gunshots speaks volumes about the level of fear residents endure. This makes me wonder about the role of community initiatives. The idea of weekly community lunches by the Durham police is commendable, but is it enough? I hope these efforts can eventually build trust between residents and law enforcement, encouraging people to come forward without fear of retaliation. How can the community bridge this trust gap more effectively? I’d love to hear thoughts or any success stories from similar neighborhoods that have seen positive change. This is a collective issue, and sadly, until we find a way to work together, so many families will continue to hurt. My thoughts are with Carl Suitt Jr.’s loved ones and everyone affected by this tragedy.
