Amidst the grim backdrop of Detroit's unresolved homicide crisis, one aspect of the Zondra Hawkins case that haunts me is the struggle for witnesses to come forward. It's understandable why there might be hesitance—fear of retribution, distrust of authorities—but it becomes a vicious cycle that traps families in pain. Zondra's case has been left to gather dust, a trend we've seen too often. This isn't just about pointing fingers at law enforcement for resource constraints or the sheer number of cases they handle; it's about the entire community coming together to say "enough." Every bit of information, no matter how small, can turn the tide. For Zondra's family—a family I can't begin to imagine the depth of their loss—every day without answers is another day of unimaginable pain. I really hope that continued efforts from dedicated officers, community organizations, and maybe someone with a piece of information decide to step out from the shadows. Zondra deserves that, and so does her family. How do we support creating an environment where people feel safe to speak up? Would love to hear thoughts or ideas on how other places have managed to effectively encourage witness cooperation.
