Has anyone else been following the Hong Zheng case and thought about the incredible bravery of his wife, Shirley Chan? It's horrifying what she went through, yet she had the presence of mind and courage to return fire despite being injured herself. I can't even imagine the shock and trauma she must have experienced in that moment. As if losing her husband in such a violent way wasn’t enough, having to relive those moments over and over in court must be terribly difficult. While it's a relief that those responsible have been arrested, it’s alarming to think these communities feel increasingly at risk. Crimes like this affect not only the direct victims but also instill fear in broader communities, making them feel targeted. It’s reassuring to see organizations like North Carolina Asian Americans Together raising awareness about these issues. Let’s hope that brings some measure of change. Does anyone have more information about how the community is supporting the family?
I'm still reeling from the news about Hong Zheng's murder. It's perplexing and deeply unsettling to think that some people believed they could target him and his family, presumably just because they owned a business and might have cash on hand. It really highlights a dire need for more community protection, especially for minority business owners who seem to be disproportionately victimized. Shirley Chan's bravery in such a difficult moment is commendable, but it's tragic she even needed to defend herself and her family that way. I'm hoping for justice for the Zheng family and that this case brings more awareness to the unique threats Asian American communities face. Does anyone know if there have been any broader community measures introduced in Durham since this tragic incident?
