I've been reading up on the case of Town Marshal Everett Smith, and something that really caught my attention was the sheer chaos that must've enveloped Olla in the wake of the fire and his tragic murder. Living in a small town must have made both events deeply personal for the community. It's baffling to think of how swiftly law and order can be upended in such a short time. It's troubling to consider that after a dramatic fire, instead of a sense of rebuilding, the town was faced with the horror of losing their Marshal. I've always believed that during such tough times, communities come together, but when the legal system fails, it leaves a long-lasting impact. I can't imagine what his family went through, especially with those accused of his murder ultimately walking free. It's a stark reminder of the challenges in law enforcement work and justice back then. Anyone else think the town might have been too overwhelmed by the disaster to effectively pursue justice?
