Town Marshal Everett Smith, age 30, was shot and killed on January 2, 1903, in Olla, Louisiana. He was entering a downtown saloon early in the morning to order it closed due to an expired operating license when he was shot multiple times. Marshal Smith was found dead on the saloon floor with six gunshot wounds. The incident occurred shortly after a fire had destroyed half the town, and excitement over the fire was subsiding at the time.
