In the early morning hours of Friday, January 2, 1903, the town of Olla, Louisiana, was still reeling from a fire that had recently devastated half of the downtown area. Amidst the lingering excitement and chaos, Town Marshal Everett Smith, a 30-year-old male, undertook his duty to maintain order.
