I was reading about the tragic death of Patrolman John F. McDermott, and one detail I keep coming back to is the role his sister, Mary, played in the aftermath. It must have been incredibly traumatic for her to discover her brother in that state. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to process such a shocking scene and then have to hold onto the knowledge that you were the last family member to see him alive. It makes me wonder about the support systems that were available back then for family members dealing with such tragedies. I hope Mary had a strong network of friends and family to lean on during that incredibly tough period. Losing someone is never easy, but in such sudden and unforeseen circumstances, it must have been particularly hard to come to terms with.
Anyone else find it a bit strange that no one heard anything when Officer McDermott fell? This was in 1900, but I assume the neighborhood would have been pretty populated, even back then. Did anyone ever mention hearing the gunshot or maybe even his fall? It must be so tough for his sister, Mary, to stumble upon such a shocking scene without any clear understanding of what happened. It makes me wonder if there were any other unexplored angles or if it’s just one of those tragic accidents that leaves more questions than answers. Thoughts are with his family—what a difficult time that must have been for everyone involved.
I was doing some reading on the tragic loss of Patrolman John F. McDermott and couldn't help but feel for his sister, Mary. It must have been devastating for her to find her brother in that state. The bond between siblings is often incredibly strong, and I can't imagine the shock and despair she must have endured.
Even though it was ruled an accident, I wonder if Mary had any lingering doubts or questions about what truly happened that day. It's always tough when a loved one's life is cut short in such unexpected circumstances, leaving family and friends to grapple with questions that might not have clear answers. My heart goes out to the McDermott family and everyone who cherished him.
Experiences like these really underscore the dangers law enforcement officers face, not just on duty but even in their everyday lives. Rest in peace, Officer McDermott. Your service is not forgotten.
