I've been looking into the life and service of Matthew E. McGrath as part of my research on early 20th-century railroad police. McGrath's story is a reminder of the dangers that officers like him faced on a nightly basis while protecting the railroads. It's such a stark contrast to think that something as routine as a patrol could turn so tragic in a matter of moments. Even though details on the investigation are scarce, it's clear that McGrath was deeply committed to his role. It’s heartwarming to see that his funeral was well attended and honored at St. Anne's Church. My thoughts are with Annie McGrath and the loved ones who had to bear such a sudden loss. I wonder if there are any surviving family members who have stories or personal mementos passed down. If anyone has more information, particularly about the investigation or what happened after the incident, I’d love to hear more. Let's keep Matthew's memory alive and honor his service.
