I was recently reading about the murder of Joey Didier and something struck me about how pivotal the community's role was in seeking justice. With Joey's killer being eligible for parole every few years, it must have been an unimaginable burden for his family to continuously relive those awful memories. Yet, it seems like the community in Rockford really rose to the occasion by rallying behind the Didier family. Seeing local businesses and even the Register Star stepping forward to help with petitions shows the power of collective support. It’s heartening to know that, despite how terrifying the situation was back then, people came together to ensure justice was served. It’s reassuring to hear about communities coming together in times of such distress. My thoughts are with Joey’s family and all those who were affected.

I've been thinking a lot about the Didier case and its impact on the Rockford community. It must have been so terrifying for parents at that time—knowing your child could be in danger doing something as ordinary as delivering newspapers. Joey's tragic murder wasn't just a personal loss for his family but a chilling wake-up call for everyone in the area. My heart goes out to his family and friends who had to find a way to move forward after such a devastating loss. What I find particularly striking is how the community really rallied around the Didiers. Can you imagine the constant dread and re-traumatization they must have felt every time Lower was up for parole? It’s inspiring how people united to support the family by signing petitions and raising awareness. The fact that Joey's sister, Diane, continued to fight for justice over all those years is a testament to the resilience and unwavering strength of their family. It’s comforting to see how adversity brought people together to stand up for Joey. I hope they found some peace after Lower's death in 2017, knowing the community stood with them for all those years.
