I’ve been doing some reading about Angel Cano’s case, and it’s just so terribly sad to see the impact gang culture has had on young lives like his. What really strikes me is how misleading appearances can be; a simple promise of a marijuana purchase turned deadly in a matter of minutes. It’s frightening how quickly a situation can devolve into violence, especially when there are rivalries and gang affiliations involved. What truly hits hard is imagining the heartache of Angel’s friends and family. He was just 16—so much potential, and a whole life ahead of him, now lost. One can only wonder how many more young lives are being affected in similar ways across Chicago. It’s crucial that as a community, we find ways to protect these kids from being caught in gang crossfires. My heart goes out to everyone who knew Angel, and I hope that, in time, there can be healing and change to prevent future tragedies like this. Thoughts or insights, anyone?
