It's been over a decade since Coby Bridgeman's tragic passing, and it still feels incredibly heavy on the hearts of those who knew him. One aspect that doesn’t get talked about enough is the complete randomness and senselessness of that night. Coby, just out on a summer evening in his own neighborhood, simply asked for a lighter—something so ordinary, so everyday. Yet that small interaction resulted in a life being lost too soon. I've been going through old news articles and community stories, and it strikes me how this could truly happen to any one of us or someone we love. The randomness is what makes it all the more unsettling. It reminds me of how fragile life is and how quickly things can change for the worse. For Coby's family and friends, events like these highlight the need for healing and support from each other and surrounding communities. It's important we come together, not only to honor his memory but also to push harder for solutions to prevent such tragedies in the future. Coby deserved so much more than to become another statistic of gun violence. His life and potential should not be forgotten as we continue to hope for justice and brighter days ahead for neighborhoods like Austin.
