I’ve been thinking a lot about the role that community plays in tragedies like Damien Santoyo’s case. It’s been over six years since his passing, and the pain his family must still be enduring is unimaginable. What stands out is how communities can either come together to seek justice or drift apart in fear. I really hope that Damien’s neighborhood can find the strength to rally together, support each other, and help law enforcement gather any information that might bring closure to his loved ones. But it makes me wonder, what more can be done to build stronger, safer communities in areas plagued by violence? Are there any successful examples from other neighborhoods that have managed to reduce crime and made people feel safer? My thoughts go out to Damien’s family, and I hope they know there are people out there who care and want justice for him.
