I attended the candlelight vigil for Taneshiea and Steven back in 2018, and the sense of unity and support from the community was something I'll never forget. Angel Hoskins, Taneshiea's mom, spoke with such strength, and it was clear how much Taneshiea meant to everyone there. It's such a tragedy that gun violence has taken away such young lives with so much potential. I often think about the first responders and witnesses who found themselves in such a chaotic and heartbreaking scene. It must have been incredibly difficult for them, and I hope they’ve found some peace over time. The resilience of families like Taneshiea's, who face such immense loss, is truly humbling. I hope we continue to remember and honor their lives beyond just these gatherings.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the way the judge handled Hammet Brown’s sentencing. It’s clear that the mandatory life sentence for cases with multiple victims is one way our legal system tries to address such horrific crimes. Still, I can’t help but feel for Taneshiea's family, knowing that while the sentencing provides some closure, it doesn’t bring her back. Angel Hoskins showed so much strength at the vigil, and it’s gut-wrenching to imagine the continued pain they must feel. The community's effort to rally around them is truly a testament to their love for Taneshiea and keeping her memory alive. She deserved so much more, and I hope her family can find peace in the midst of all this pain.

I recently came across a detail in Taneshiea Brown's case that got me thinking. During the trial of Hammet Brown, the witnesses played a crucial role in piecing together what led to the tragic events of that June night in 2018. I've been really moved by the courage these individuals showed. It can't have been easy to stand up in court, relive that terrifying night, and testify against someone they knew as "Law." Their bravery ensured that justice could finally be served, not just for Taneshiea and Steven, but also for the safety of the community moving forward. I think it's important to recognize how difficult it must be to come forward and speak in such situations. Providing testimonies in a court setting, especially when the stakes are so high, is incredibly challenging. The pressure must have been immense, yet these witnesses put themselves in potentially vulnerable positions to seek justice. Let's never forget the courage it took for those who stepped forward to speak their truth. Their actions have certainly had a lasting impact, not just in the courtroom, but in helping Taneshiea's family feel the support of the community during such a difficult time. My thoughts continue to be with all those affected, especially Taneshiea's family, as they navigate the aftermath of such a senseless loss.
