I think what's often overlooked in cases like Patrick's is the lasting impact on kids like Nyla, who are suddenly deprived of a parent. It's not just the immediate loss of support and love from someone who should have been guiding and shaping her life, but it also leaves a gap in her understanding of where she fits in the world. I can't imagine how difficult it must be for her to grow up without her dad. So much of the focus tends to be on finding the perpetrator (which, of course, is absolutely crucial), but I just hope there are efforts being made to support Nyla emotionally and provide her with the opportunities her father would have wanted for her. It's a reminder of how deep the ripple effect of violence runs, affecting not just those directly involved but entire families and generations.
