I've been following Fernando Carapia-Ruiz's case and something that really struck me was the tragic randomness of it all. It's so unsettling to think about how someone could just be in their own backyard, going about their life, when something so senseless happens. My heart goes out to his family, especially considering the news reports that he was a loving husband and a father whose new baby will never get to meet him. It feels so incredibly unjust that Fernando, who wasn't involved in any gang activity, became a victim of this cycle of violence. I'm relieved that the jury found Daniel Aguirre guilty and that there's some accountability, but I cannot imagine this makes the pain any easier for his loved ones. It makes me think about how crucial it is for communities to find more effective ways to combat the root of gang violence so that innocent people like Fernando aren't caught in the crossfire. I'd love to hear thoughts and any ideas folks might have on how communities are tackling these issues elsewhere.
