It's so unsettling to read about the ambush that took the life of Constable Mears and Fillmore Herrington. I was particularly struck by the fact that Mears was only 34 years old, with a family who undoubtedly cherished him deeply. It must have been an incredible weight on his siblings and parents, knowing he faced such dangers as part of his duty. The fact that those responsible were swiftly captured and punished was likely small comfort to the community left behind. It’s a reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers, even in those early days, and how their families paid a heavy price as well. My thoughts are with the Mears and Herrington families, who courageously faced such a tragic loss.
