I was reading up on the Jeffrey Dean Gerald case and something caught my attention that I hadn't really considered before. From what I understand, in the mid-1980s, a lot of people were coming and going in the Northern California area, given its reputation at the time for being a sort of counterculture hub. It's interesting—and deeply disturbing—how Ng and Lake were able to fly under the radar for as long as they did, despite the transient nature of the area. I wonder if this made it easier for them to operate, as people going missing might not have raised immediate alarms due to the lifestyle many were living. Does anyone know more about how local law enforcement responded at the time to disappearances like Jeffrey's, given the socio-cultural context?
