I can’t stop thinking about Kwame Stern and the sheer devastation his family must be feeling. As someone who grew up not too far from Chesterfield Avenue, it’s gut-wrenching to see yet another promising life cut short. I remember reading how so many families have lost loved ones in similar circumstances, and it’s hard not to feel this overwhelming sense of urgency to do something. The city had these neighborhood-watch meetings back in 2012, but it felt like there were never enough resources or momentum to create lasting change. I think a lot about what could have been done differently—earlier intervention programs, more collaboration between law enforcement and community leaders, or even just providing more recreational spaces and opportunities for young people. Oftentimes, I see people discussing the aftermath of these crimes, but there's less focus on preventative measures. Has anyone heard of recent efforts that might be bridging that gap? We owe it to the victims, like Kwame, to find a path forward that actually changes the narrative of violence in our city. My thoughts and sympathy go out to his family and friends who have had to endure such an unimaginable loss.
