Hi everyone,
I’ve been following this tragic case of Mary and Maggie Jenkins and was struck by the role that location played in the investigation—or lack thereof. Key Largo in the 1970s was practically a different place compared to today: sparsely populated and trickier to navigate for pinpointing who might have seen them last. I’ve read accounts that say the Keys were often seen as a haven for drifters back then, people who could easily come and go without raising any alarms.
Reading that they were last seen near Mile Marker 5, it makes you wonder how the island's transient nature worked against the investigators. In such an isolated area, with limited witnesses, conducting a thorough manhunt seems like it would have been incredibly challenging. It's no small feat because every local could potentially be a suspect, or perhaps no local at all, given how many travelers passed through.
I hope that with advancements in technology, something new can surface. Their family deserves answers. It’s situations like these that really emphasize how important preserving evidence for the long-term can be, even when the odds seem against solving a case.
Thoughts? Does anyone know if recent improvements in DNA testing have been a silver lining in any other cold cases?
Sending love to their family and friends.
The saddening ordeal of Mary and Maggie Jenkins continues to haunt their loved ones and those following the case. I've been thinking about something that I'd love to discuss here. It's about how difficult it must have been for their family, especially the older sister, Sarah Jenkins Barlow, to carry on all these years without closure. Imagine growing up so closely bonded with your siblings and then having them snatched away in such a horrific manner.
It's been over 50 years, and nothing can ever fill the void left behind or erase how traumatic it would have been for their family. I read somewhere that Sarah was just a few years older than Maggie, and they shared everything, from childhood secrets to dreams of the future. It's heart-wrenching to think of all the what-ifs and lost potential.
The dedication and hope that she's maintained give us a glimpse into how deeply they were loved and are still remembered. It’s important for us as a community to continue shedding light on the case, keeping their memories alive, and supporting any effort that might lead to answers eventually. Thinking about the toll this must have taken on their family really puts into perspective the impact such senseless violence has far beyond just the victims.
