Hey everyone,
I've been thinking about the aftermath of the awful events on August 20, 1982, especially how the community came together in the wake of such a tragic day. Ernestine Moore was such an integral part of her neighborhood, and it's clear just from the stories shared about her what a positive impact she had. But what really breaks my heart is how preventable this tragedy might have been.
The fact that someone with Carl Robert Brown's history could still acquire a shotgun is something that deserves serious attention. I know discussions about gun control can be divisive, but shouldn't we all agree on the importance of keeping our communities safe? Mental health and access to firearms should go hand in hand when we talk about preventing such tragedies.
How do we honor Ernestine and the others who lost their lives by making sure this doesn’t happen again? I’m interested in hearing your thoughts on what steps can be taken to ensure people like Carl don’t fall through the cracks in our system. It just feels like Miami learned some hard lessons that day, and we owe it to Ernestine’s memory to keep pushing forward.
Sending love to everyone affected.
