Colin Fowles, a 32-year-old Jamaican-born professional soccer player and coach, was shot and killed on September 1, 1985, at Bunche Park in Opa-locka, Florida. He was playing in a local tournament when a gang-related altercation broke out behind the goal; multiple assailants opened fire during the chaos. Fowles was struck in the stomach, transported to Parkway General Hospital, and died of his wounds after attempts to save him.
Reports describe the shooting as not specifically aimed at Fowles but the result of random gunfire during the fracas. Witnesses were numerous but the disorderly scene made identification of the shooters difficult; one attacker reportedly approached and shot Fowles at point-blank range as he tried to take cover behind a telephone pole. No significant arrests or prosecutions have been reported.
Does anyone have memories of that tournament, or information that could help clarify who was involved?
