I recently stumbled upon the story of Maysel Figueroa and it’s just so deeply upsetting to think about how lives were shattered that night at the Yoyito Cafe-Restaurant. I can't help but think about her son, Kebin, who was just five years old when he lost his mom in such a senseless act. As a parent myself, it just hits differently; imagining what he must have gone through and continues to go through is heartbreaking.
From what I read, Maysel had only started working there to build a better life for Kebin. The way the community rallied around him afterwards, offering support and ensuring he wouldn’t face this future alone, really speaks volumes about the kindness and resilience of people even in the darkest of times. It's hard not to be moved by the strength shown by victims’ families and those who stepped up to help. Anyone here from Hialeah or know how the community is doing now? I'd love to hear how people have come together in the years since.
