I just read more about the Schenecker case, and I can't stop thinking about Calyx. A bright young girl with so much potential, only 16, and already published in a literary magazine. Her friends described her as witty and creative, which makes the whole situation even more difficult to comprehend. I found myself wondering what incredible things she could have achieved if given the chance. It’s gut-wrenching to think about how her voice and talents were silenced so prematurely. A detail that struck me was how her friend mentioned Calyx’s love for writing and her dreams of going into journalism. It’s clear she was loved deeply by those who knew her, and her absence leaves a significant void. As we discuss this case, I think it’s important to remember Calyx and Beau not just as victims, but as individuals with their own stories and dreams. Their memory should serve as a call to action for better awareness and resources for mental health and family intervention. They deserved safety and protection, plain and simple.
