I've been following Rahkeem Zabaleta Brown's case and just can't shake the feeling of how deeply saddening it is. The fact that this happened so close to Brown's home, where he should've felt safe, makes it all the more tragic. And the detail about him having a baby pitbull – it just shows he was at that perfect age where you're full of dreams and hopes. The community's speculation about the shootings being gang-related is terrifying, as it reflects how entrenched violence can become in neighborhoods and impact everyone. It really brings home the need for community programs focused on youth and conflict resolution. I can't imagine the pain his family and friends are going through, and I hope that the increased attention to this case drives change to put an end to the cycles of violence. It's time for all of us to unite and create spaces where kids can grow up without fear. Rahkeem deserves that, and so does every other youth in similar situations.
