I recently came across a segment on local news about the tragic passing of Jerome Harris, lovingly known as "Keke." It’s truly devastating to see yet another life cut short due to the violence that seems to be gripping our community. Keke was on the brink of celebrating his 24th birthday when he, along with Jayln DeCosta, succumbed to such a senseless situation. It’s hard to fathom the grief their families must be going through right now.
What I really wanted to touch on is how important it is for us, as community members, to come together—not just in mourning, but also in action. I've noticed that local leaders and residents have been quite vocal about the need for change. Holding prayer vigils and memorials offers some solace, but it feels like it’s also time for more systemic efforts to tackle the root causes of this violence. We need to support our law enforcement with any information that can help these investigations, and address the issues tied to drug-related violence that seem to be a recurring theme in these tragedies.
I just hope we can prevent more families from experiencing such unimaginable loss. Justice for Keke and other victims must be a priority in the hopes of preventing further violence. Keep the dialogue going—let’s strive for a safer, more peaceful community.
