I came across an article about the tragic case of the Almodovar family in Orlando and couldn’t help but reflect on the ripple effect tragedies like these have on communities. I didn’t know them, but reading about 12-year-old Gabriel and the rest of his family was incredibly moving. I noticed he was involved in his school’s basketball team, and it made me think about how sports teams often become like a second family to kids. I can’t imagine what his teammates and coaches must be going through, losing someone who was part of their team and everyday lives. This heartbreak shows us how deep the unseen struggles or pressures individuals face in private can be and how they might manifest in the most tragic ways. It stresses the need for us to check in on each other, our friends, and our families. Talking openly about mental health and being prepared to support one another can be crucial. Sending love and strength to everyone affected by this awful situation, especially those classmates and teammates who are trying to process such an unimaginable loss.
