On February 4, 2022, eight-year-old Ronziyah Atkins, known as Biggs or Ziyah, was killed by a stray bullet in a drive-by shooting while playing on the porch with siblings and cousins on the 500 block of Southeast First Street in Belle Glade, Florida. The shooting happened around 7:15 p.m.; the bullet was not intended for her.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office identified two suspects: a 20-year-old man, Andrew Thomas, arrested in Coral Springs and charged with first-degree murder with a firearm and attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, and an 18-year-old Belle Glade resident who was a juvenile at the time and also charged with first-degree murder and multiple counts of attempted first-degree murder. Investigators have said the shooting was retaliatory; cellphone data and other evidence placed the second suspect near the scene and both suspects were alleged to have had semiautomatic pistols.

The community held vigils and mourned the loss of Ronziyah. If anyone has information about what happened that evening, please come forward to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
