Has anyone looked into the backgrounds of the thieves involved in Constable Leary's murder? I find it curious how they became so suspicious of such a well-thought-out plan. It makes me wonder if they had run-ins with law enforcement before or if they had connections in Columbia that tipped them off. Given how quickly everything escalated, it seems like they were prepared to react violently at a moment's notice. It's so terribly sad for both families losing loved ones to such senseless violence. I hope historians or anyone with information can shed some light on these criminals' pasts and what drove them to such extreme actions. Seems important for understanding the full scope of the risks those like Leary faced in that era.
I’ve been doing some digging into this case and something that keeps bothering me is the role of the townspeople after Constable Leary and Policeman McDonald were killed. I understand the outrage and the desire for swift justice, but the lynching of those suspects is such a stark example of vigilante justice taking over. It makes me wonder about the community's trust in the legal system back then. Were they just too devastated and angry to let a formal trial take its course, or was there more to the story? I can't help but feel for the families of both the victims and the suspects. Nobody deserved the horror of those events. What do others think? Was this common in that era, or did this case just feel exceptionally volatile?
