I've been reading about Jim Gianera and can't shake the thought of what a bright future he and Joan had ahead of them. It's deeply unsettling how a person like Herbert Mullin, with such a history of mental illness, could get to a point where he believed in the insanity of preventing earthquakes through murder. It's easy to wonder, where did the system fail him, and in turn, fail Jim and Joan? This case really makes me think about all the signs and cries for help that might have been overlooked. I sincerely hope that in the years since the tragedy, there have been changes implemented to catch these signs earlier and provide the right support. My heart goes out to the Gianera's child and family; the loss they had to endure is unimaginable. ?
