I've been thinking about that era in the early '70s when hitchhiking was such a common mode of transport, especially among college students like Alice. It's chilling to realize how something that seems so innocent and practical could have such deadly consequences. Many students didn't have cars and relied on the kindness of strangers to get to and from campus. I can't begin to imagine how Alice's friends and family felt when they learned what happened to her after just trying to get to class.
The Santa Cruz community must have been shaken to its core, knowing that someone as dangerous as Edmund Kemper was in their midst, taking advantage of this practice. In retrospect, it really paints a picture of how vulnerable everyone was at the time. My heart goes out to Alice's family, who had to endure the pain of losing such a promising young student in such a devastating way. It makes me grateful for the safety measures and awareness we have today, but it's also a sobering reminder of how important it is to stay vigilant and support each other.
Does anyone have more info on Alice's academic background? I've been reading a lot about her case, and I'm struck by what a dedicated student she was. It seems like she was genuinely passionate about her studies and had a strong support system at UCSC. Her friends and professors must have been devastated by the news. It's incredibly tragic to think about all the potential she had and how abruptly it was taken away. If anyone knows what she was studying or has any stories about her time at the university, I'd be interested to hear them. Remembering her for her achievements and passions is another way to honor her memory.
