I’ve been thinking about Fernando Gutierrez and all the complexities surrounding his tragic death during the Good Guys standoff. I'm really focusing on the fact that he was there with his two nieces when the chaos erupted. I can't imagine the terror he must have felt trying to protect them in that overwhelming situation. It's something that hits particularly hard, knowing he was there simply to shop with family, only to end up in such a horrific scenario. It's also tough grappling with the coroner's findings. It paints such a complicated picture of a man who, like many of us, might have made questionable choices. Still, I feel like that shouldn’t overshadow the fact that he was a victim of incredibly violent circumstances that none of us ever expect to face during a normal day out. His family, especially those two young nieces, are left with memories of an awful day and the loss of someone they loved. It’s been over 30 years, but I believe these kinds of tragedies stick with families and communities. My heart goes out to everyone affected. If there’s one thing to take away, it’s perhaps a reminder of the things we hold dear and the unpredictability of life. No one deserves to be remembered just for the worst circumstances surrounding their death.
