I’ve been thinking about how close-knit communities like Grass Valley must have felt the shockwaves after such a tragic event. Mike Markle seemed like a genuinely good person, deeply rooted in the Yuba-Sutter area, balancing his career at Lyon’s Restaurant while raising two young kids. It breaks my heart to think of those children growing up without their father, knowing he was taken from them in such a violent way. It's frustrating how the mental health system failed not only Scott Harlan Thorpe but also those around him. I hope changes like Laura’s Law prevent others from experiencing the profound loss Mike’s family and friends are enduring. While nothing can undo what happened, at least there’s some hope that positive change can come from such an unimaginable tragedy. Mike’s memory deserves that much. What has been the community's response over the years? Have there been memorials or any annual events to honor Mike and the others who lost their lives that day? If anyone has information, I’d love to know how people have continued to remember and celebrate their lives in positive ways.
