I’ve been following the case of Jesus Alejandro Hernandez and it just makes my heart go out to his family and friends. Like many of you, I am struck by the fear and silence that seems to grip the community. Can you imagine living with that constant worry about retaliation? It must make it so difficult for anyone who wants to do the right thing and come forward. This aspect of the investigation really hits home for me because it highlights the larger issue of trust (or the lack thereof) between law enforcement and community members in areas affected by gang violence. How do you bridge that gap? There must be ways to encourage more cooperation and support from the community while ensuring their safety. If anyone has insights or ideas on building trust, I’d love to hear them.
