Hey everyone, I've been going down the rabbit hole on the Parrish and Johnston case from '97. One thing that's been puzzling me is why they didn't file a flight plan. I know it's not mandatory for private pilots flying in VFR (Visual Flight Rules), but wouldn't that have been a prudent step, especially given the unpredictable weather around Denali? It might have provided some leads for search and rescue efforts. I've also come across some mentions of similar cases where filing a flight plan has made a significant difference in search operations. Surely a flight path over such challenging terrain and changing weather conditions would warrant a plan, right? Maybe they were just planning a quick trip and thought it unnecessary, but it seems so risky. Does anyone else have more insight on why some experienced pilots skip filing plans, especially in such areas? Would love to hear your thoughts.
