On a late June day in 1997, 41-year-old Linda Mae Parrish, along with her husband Monte and their two friends, Donald and Karen Johnston, embarked on what was likely intended to be a scenic sightseeing flight. They departed from Merrill Field in Anchorage, Alaska, in a yellow and white Cessna 182 aircraft with the tail number N3186U. It is believed their destination was the majestic Denali National Park, a vast and rugged wilderness. The group did not file a flight plan, a detail that would later complicate search efforts. The last known sighting of the Cessna was over the park, after which the aircraft and its four occupants seemingly vanished into the formidable Alaskan landscape. The disappearance of the Cessna triggered an extensive and challenging search operation. Coordinated by the Rescue Coordination Center at Elmendorf Air Force Base, the effort involved a significant number of resources, including the National Park Service's Lama helicopter, National Guard C-130s and Pavehawk helicopters, Army Chinook helicopters, and as many as 16 Civil Air Patrol aircraft. Despite these considerable efforts, no trace of the plane or an emergency locator transmitter (ELT) signal was ever detected. Radar data suggested the aircraft was near the Kahiltna Peaks area before its transponder signal was lost. After eight days of intensive searching yielded no results, the official search was called off, and the families were briefed on the difficult decision. The case of Linda Parrish and her companions is a haunting reminder of the unforgiving nature of the Alaskan wilderness. In the years since their disappearance, no wreckage or any sign of the four individuals has ever been discovered. The prevailing theory is that the plane crashed somewhere within the vast and treacherous terrain of Denali National Park. The lack of a flight plan, combined with the challenging landscape, has left investigators with few clues.
