I’ve been following the case of Salvador Avila Jr. and something that's been on my mind is the bravery it took for him to try and help his friend that night. It strikes me how he didn’t even want to be part of the altercation, but his instinct to help someone in need cost him his life. As tragic as this is, it makes me reflect on the kind of person Salvador must have been—compassionate and selfless. It’s incredibly unjust that he was caught in something so senseless when all he wanted was to lend a hand to a friend in trouble. I can only imagine the pain Salvador's family and friends have gone through, losing someone so young and full of potential in such a horrific way. While justice was served with the conviction of Luis Rodriguez, it's still a small comfort against the void Salvador's absence has left behind. My thoughts are with his loved ones during such an unimaginably difficult time. This case is yet another reminder of the urgent need to address the root causes of gang violence to prevent more young lives from being cut short.
