I recently read about the tragic case involving Steven Eugene Washington, and it's truly a painful reminder of how we need to address training for law enforcement, especially when it comes to interacting with people who have disabilities. It's crucial that officers are equipped with the necessary skills to recognize signs of autism and other conditions, which could potentially prevent conflicts from escalating. I'm heartened to see that the civilian commission pointed out the serious tactical errors, but it's horrifying that it had to happen in the first place. My thoughts are with Steven's family—I can't imagine the distress they’ve been through, knowing that Steven wasn’t even a threat. Hopefully, these discussions and rulings will lead to more thoughtful approaches in the future, sparing other families from similar grief.
