I’ve been thinking a lot about Melanie Virgen and her tragic death at Libby Lake Park. It's just so senseless that these kids became victims in a gang-related battle they weren't even a part of. I can’t even begin to imagine what Melanie’s family must be enduring, especially knowing she was just 13 with her whole life ahead of her. The fact that the shooters recognized the innocence of their victims during the court proceedings brings a sliver of humanity to their actions, but nothing can truly make up for such a tragic loss. I hope Melanie's family can find some comfort in each other, even as they wrestle with the fact that justice, while served, can never return their loved one to them. Sending thoughts and strength to all of them during this unimaginable time.
I can't stop thinking about the atmosphere at Libby Lake Park, especially on that night back in 2013. It's unsettling to think this beautiful place has seen so much tragedy. It’s supposed to be a place for kids to have fun, not a backdrop for such violence. Melanie Virgen and Edgar Sanchez Rios were so young, just hanging out with friends and paying respects—how could anyone see them as targets? My heart aches for the families. No one should have to fear for their children like this. Every time I pass by a park, I’m reminded of them and their lost futures. I hope the community continues to push for peace and healing.
