Does anyone else feel like Larise Smith's case really put a spotlight on how random and senseless violence can be? My heart goes out to his family and everyone in Leimert Park who had to deal with that loss. What really gets me is that Larise wasn’t involved in anything that should have put him in harm's way. Just walking his dog, minding his own business, and his life was taken away by someone who didn’t even know him. It speaks volumes about how unpredictable these violent encounters were with Patrick Watkins, the so-called "Western Bandit." The pattern of his attacks, whether he was on a bike or on foot, carries this disturbing randomness that makes you feel like it could happen to anyone at any time. It’s a reminder of how crucial it is for communities and law enforcement to work together to address crime. I hope Larise’s family finds some peace in knowing that justice is being served, though I can’t imagine what they’ve been through.
