Listening to a podcast recently, I heard about the tragic case of Jordi Astudillo, and one detail that's been on my mind is the area where the shooting occurred. Vermont Square is known to have gang activity, but I wonder how much community outreach is happening to try and prevent these tragedies before they occur. Are there local organizations actively working to make these spaces safer for young people? It breaks my heart to think about families like Jordi’s living in fear because of the violence in their neighborhoods. I hope that alongside bringing his killers to justice, efforts are being made to foster safer communities. Anyone here local to Vermont Square who knows about ongoing initiatives or how the community is coping?
Hey everyone,
I've been thinking a lot about the nerve it must've taken for the suspect to carry out Jordi Astudillo's murder. It happened in such a public spot—in an alley, but not exactly hidden—so it makes me wonder if there's a bigger sense of fear or complete disregard in gang-related crimes that emboldens these people. It's terrifying to think that someone could feel comfortable enough to do this in a neighborhood where people are supposed to feel safe.
There's talk of using CCTV footage more effectively in LA, especially in high-risk areas, to deter crimes like this. I know that tech has its limitations and privacy concerns, but could it have made a difference here? Maybe if there were more cameras around, catching that light-colored sedan wouldn't just be left up to chance.
Thoughts and prayers continue to go out to Jordi's family and friends. They deserve answers and justice.
