It's difficult to imagine how Deputy Belanger's family must have felt dealing with his injuries for all those years, and then losing him in 2018. I keep thinking about his daughter, who had to grow up with the ongoing reality of her father's condition. She would've been so young when this all happened, and the constant fear and sadness must have profoundly affected her life. I'm sure she felt robbed of all the experiences a daughter should have with her dad. It's easy to forget how these tragedies ripple through time and affect the loved ones left behind, not just at the moment it happened but for so many years after. My heart goes out to her, knowing she had to endure seeing her father in such pain for so long. It's not just the officers on the front line who face dangers; their families sacrifice a lot too, sometimes in ways that are invisible to the rest of us.

Has anyone else come across the detail about the skateboarder in the Steven Belanger case? It's so disturbing to think about how vulnerability can come from the most unexpected places. We often picture threats in obvious forms, but here was a kid with just a skateboard approaching, which seems so innocuous. My heart goes out to Steven's family for enduring such a prolonged ordeal stemming from that tragic moment. It’s a painful reminder of how quickly life can change, especially for those in such a selfless line of work. Keeping them in my thoughts.
