Michael Thomas Bingham Jr., 31, and his girlfriend Angela Lynne McConnell were found dead from gunshot wounds on September 7, 2018, at a transient camp near 500 Black Canyon Road in Shasta Lake, California. Deputies from the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office discovered the two deceased residents at an undeveloped piece of property after a report of two bodies; the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit treated the deaths as homicides and scheduled autopsies to determine exact causes of death.
No suspects were in custody at the time and investigators said there was no immediate threat to the public. The case later remained unsolved. McConnell’s mother, Tammy Carpenter, has pushed for answers, organizing community events and funding a billboard near the murder site offering a $30,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. McConnell was a member of the Hoopa Valley Tribe, and her death has been cited in discussions about violence against Indigenous women.
Anyone with information about the killings is asked to come forward.
