I’ve been following Alexis Mendoza Raymundo’s case closely since it happened, and it’s been a long road for his family and the Santa Maria community. I recently read about the arrests of four suspects, and while nothing can bring Alexis back, I hope this brings some peace to those who loved him. It got me thinking about the parking structure where Alexis was killed. How can we make these public places safer? It’s unsettling to think about how something so terrible could happen in a location that so many of us use every day. Though I’m relieved that the police are making progress, the thought that this incident unfolded in such a public space really struck me. I’m truly hoping this tragedy prompts more discussions and actions towards keeping our community secure. My heart goes out to Alexis’s family and the injured woman. If you happen to have any ideas or information about improving security in local areas like that parking structure, it might be worth raising them in community meetings. It’s a step in the right direction, at least, to ensure these types of incidents don’t keep happening.
