I wanted to bring attention to something that’s been weighing on my mind about Joshua Simmons’ case. It's so tragic what happened to him during what should have been a simple buy-and-sell transaction. But this got me thinking about the broader issue of the safety of these online marketplace deals. I know many of us have probably used apps or websites to buy and sell things, thinking there's no harm. The fact that Joshua planned to meet at a public housing complex seemed like a smart decision, but even public places aren't always safe. It's just devastating that this violent encounter happened where many believe they're taking precautions. It also makes me wonder how we can better secure these transactions or if there are efforts in Long Beach or elsewhere to make such exchanges safer? We need to urge our communities and local authorities to establish secure exchange locations to prevent such horrifying incidents in the future. No family should have to endure such a loss over something so seemingly innocuous. My thoughts are with Joshua’s family and everyone touched by this senseless act.
