I’ve been reading up on the case of Anthony "Little Augie" Carfano, and something that's been sticking with me is the tragic fate of Janice Drake. It's so haunting to consider that her only connection to this brutal underworld was maybe just a wrong-place-wrong-time scenario. Being a former Miss New Jersey and married to a comedian, she seemed like she was living a world apart from mafia drama. Drake’s inclusion in this tale of violence makes me question what she knew, if anything. Was she truly an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of Carfano's underworld dealings? Or was there more to her relationship with him? Reading about her life, it's hard to not feel deep empathy for her family, who lost someone who should have had none of this violence in her life. It's also chilling to think about how her presence could have complicated the already dangerous situation Carfano found himself in. It just goes to show how entangled and far-reaching the consequences of organized crime can be. No matter from what angle we look at this, it's an example of how these power struggles have devastating and often unforeseen consequences on those who might not even truly be involved.
