I was recently reading through some old articles about the Olean High School shooting in 1974, and Carmen Wright Drayton's story truly struck a chord with me. It’s incredibly unsettling to think about how she was just going about her day, driving past the school, completely unaware of the chaos about to unfold. She had her whole life ahead of her, and in an instant, that future was taken away because of one person's actions. What I find particularly poignant is that Carmen wasn't even a part of the school community—she was just passing by. This highlights how random and senseless these acts of violence can be, affecting people who were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. I can only imagine the pain and loss her family must have felt, especially since such tragedies remain etched in the community's memory for years. Does anyone know if there's anything in Olean that commemorates the victims, like a memorial or something similar? It's so important that we continue to remember Carmen and all those affected. Her life mattered, and we shouldn't forget the impact that day had on so many lives.
