Keenan Russell was 21 when he was shot on Acorn Avenue in Central Islip, New York, in the early hours of May 28, 2013. Leaving a party, he was struck by a shotgun blast to the abdomen and died about 12 hours later at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore.
Investigators say the shooting was part of a wave of gang violence and was a case of mistaken identity. Members of MS-13 reportedly were driving through Central Islip looking for rivals and saw Russell wearing red, a color they associated with the Bloods; that assumption led to the shooting. Another man, Derrick Mayes, had been killed two days earlier in related violence.
An individual named Jeffry Rosales was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Russell’s death, and a federal investigation later produced charges against several MS-13 members in connection with a string of violent crimes that included these killings. What details about motive or responsibility remain unclear to the public?
