I recently learned about the tragic 2013 shooting in Brooklyn, and it's hard to wrap my head around such a senseless loss of life. I keep thinking about the families and friends of Ali Eskandarian, Soroush, and Arash Farazmand, and how they must be grieving the loss of their loved ones even years later. What struck me the most was the detail about the shooter carrying the rifle in a guitar case—such a chilling juxtaposition for an act committed against musicians who were simply following their passions. The arts community can be so close-knit, and I can't imagine the impact this has had on their circle and the Iranian expatriate community striving for freedom through music. This incident has stayed with me as a reminder of the pain behind the headlines and the enduring holes left in the hearts of those who knew them.
I came across a detail that I found really chilling. So, Rafie entered the building by climbing onto the roof and coming through a terrace. It’s chilling to think how premeditated this was, and how nothing seemed out of the ordinary at first glance to others around him. It makes you wonder how someone can be driven to such an extreme. The fact that he used a guitar case to conceal the rifle is so unnerving, especially in a community that embraced music and creativity. I can’t imagine the fear and confusion that Ali and the Farazmand brothers must’ve felt in those moments. My heart goes out to their families and the surviving band members. It's such an unfair reality that someone who sought refuge and freedom here ultimately faced such a tragic end. This case just keeps reminding me how fragile everything can be and how senseless violence rips apart lives that were filled with promise.
