I’ve been thinking a lot about the role of community events and their unintended consequences. It’s so unfortunate that a night intended for fun and celebration, hosted by Sucka Free Events, ended in such a senseless way. To those hosting and attending these gatherings, safety measures should always be a priority. With Nakia Garnett allegedly responsible for Phillip Harris’s death, it raises questions about how we can better prevent conflicts from spiraling out of control at such events. I really feel for the folks in St. Albans and everyone who knew and loved Phillip—you lose a piece of your community when something like this happens. Let’s keep talking about ways to ensure events stay safe in his memory.

Has anyone looked into the security measures at the Sucka Free Events party that night? It's so disturbing to think that a disagreement could spiral into something this tragic without anyone stepping in before it was too late. I can't stop thinking about the fact that a life was lost over a moment of anger. Were there any security cameras around that could have possibly caught another angle of the argument or the aftermath? My heart goes out to Phillip's family and friends. It's devastating to think of someone going to a party for a night of fun and ending up in such a tragic situation. We really need to have a broader conversation about how these events are managed and what can be done to prevent such senseless violence in the future. Stay strong, Queens community.
